Kansas City National Security Campus to Hire High School Graduates with Career Technical Education Certifications

KANSAS CITY, MO- The U.S. Department of Energy’s Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), managed by Honeywell FM&T, is providing an opportunity for rewarding and well-paying life-long careers in manufacturing to graduating high school students with career technical education certifications.

“A very long time ago I was one of those students in high school (machining). For anyone who is entering their senior year of high school knowing they do not want to go to college at this stage of their life, this a great avenue for learning a trade and getting a career started,” said Norman Kump, Manufacturing Manager at the KCNSC.

High school graduates now have the opportunity to join KCNSC’s nearly 5,800 dedicated employees who are passionate about our national security mission to ensure the safety, security and reliability of our nation’s nuclear deterrent. KCNSC leaders are excited about the opportunity to provide future generations in our community a place to develop and gain experience and skills in a high-tech advanced manufacturing facility and start a career -- all while earning a great wage.

New employees at the KCNSC encounter a great environment where they are set up to succeed in their new career with a mentor, extensive hands-on training, and a skills assessment to find the best career fit for each individual.

The jobs currently available with no prior experience or degree include:

AASP & ASP (Assembler, Adjuster, Special Precision): roles include planning, assembling, and fitting piece parts to assemblies which require a high degree of precision, skill, dexterity, versatility, and ingenuity as well as judgment and self-discipline. Times and finely tunes all electrical and mechanical components.
Production Fabricators: requires handwork and assembly operations on mechanical, electrical, plastic, rubber, and sheet metal products, including assemblies requiring repair, modification, retrofit or conversion.
And Inspector: inspect molds, design gages, test stands, fixtures, templates, set-up devices and related items for completeness and conformance in respect to drawings and scripts written with software applications.

These entry level positions start at $31.33 an hour, plus applicable shift differential pay.

Local High School Students Find Opportunities Next Door

Seven graduating seniors at Grandview High School were tentatively offered positions at the KCNSC. Grandview High School students have the opportunity to attend Herdon Career Academy to participate in a variety of traditional career technical education programs including, advanced manufacturing pathways, welding, cybersecurity, software development and more. More than half of Grandview High School students move into career fields immediately after graduation.

"This give our students who are not interested in college a viable and valuable opportunity to work while in high school. It's a bright light at the end of the tunnel. It's not some abstract thing they learn about in a career class. It is a real high-paying job that can easily lead to a successful career right out of high school. It gives them something tangible to work toward,” said Grandview School District Director of Instructional Technology, Scott Sisemore.

KCNSC and the Grandview School District are on a journey together to develop real-world learning opportunities to improve opportunities for students in south Kansas City.
