Nuclear Weapons Program

OUR CORE MISSION

  • New Production
  • Technology, Readiness, Safety, Infrastructure & Operations
  • Sustainment
  • Trainers & Simulators
  • Maintenance & Life-Cycle
  • Inventory
  • Dismantlement & Disposal

At the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), our core mission is supporting the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA’s) Directed Stockpile Work / Nuclear Weapons Program mission and we are focused on developing, producing, procuring and delivering over 80% of all nonnuclear components in support of the U.S. nuclear deterrent.

With oversight from the NNSA, and collaboration between the Department of Energy and Nuclear Security Enterprise production plants, national laboratories and security sites, KCNSC plays an integral part of weapon modernization from concept through design, production, delivery and lifecycle management. NNSA’s weapon modernization activities ensure that the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile continues to meet Department of Defense (DoD) requirements while enhancing safety and security. These efforts address aging, unavailability of replacement parts and integration with DoD’s modernized nuclear weapons delivery systems. KCNSC supports these efforts, currently supporting all modernization programs in development and production, as well as all current stockpile weapon systems. Additionally, KCNSC is planning for subsequent modernization and continuation of stockpile systems. Our stockpile stewardship mission includes system design and optimization, advance process engineering, component and sub-component manufacturing, supply chain management, acceptance and certification, requirements analysis, stockpile surveillance and operational support.
