HSE&EM recognized for industry excellence in FY24

Every workday, team members at the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), managed by Honeywell FM&T, come to work committed to safeguard well-being. Whether it’s using proper personal protective equipment, overseeing fire prevention measures or taking steps to prevent the spread of illness, KCNSC’s culture of health and safety helps protect individuals and their teammates around the clock.
KCNSC’s Health, Safety, Environment and Equipment Maintenance (HSE&EM) organization is an integrated business partner that enables operational excellence by providing best-in-class risk management services, promoting employee well-being and facilitating production equipment reliability. With consistent industry benchmark performance in multiple areas, the team’s proactive strategies provide essential support in fulfilling mission requirements.
Each year, public service organizations within the industry, such as the National Safety Council (NSC) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), acknowledge leading organizations across the country for outstanding safety performance. KCNSC received multiple accolades for fiscal year (FY) 24 safety performance, including the Million Work Hours Award, the Occupational Excellence Achievement Award and the Safe-In-Sound Award.
HSE&EM Director Tom Moibi offered his congratulations to the HSE&EM team for its hard work in making safety a core value of everyday operations, adding that the recognition highlights the importance each KCNSC employee plays in making safety a core value.
“Winning these awards is a proud moment for our organization,” said Moibi. “It showcases our collective commitment to not just meeting, but exceeding safety standards by integrating safety into everything we do.”
NSC Awards
Million Work Hours Award
The NSC Million Work Hours Award recognizes organizations that have completed at least 1 million consecutive work hours without an occupational injury or illness resulting in time away from work. An occupational illness refers to any health condition caused by the work environment or job-related activities. Occupational injuries, on the other hand, include physical or mental harm that happens while working and can include injury due to accidents, repetitive motions or exposure to hazards. In FY24, KCNSC logged more than 10 million work hours over a nine-month period without a lost-time incident.
Occupational Excellence Achievement Award
This award recognizes organizations with an injury and illness record better than or equal to 50% of the Bureau of Labor Statistics with respect to its North American Industry Classification System code (a category determined by a company’s industry). In FY24, KCNSC achieved a lost workday case rate of 0.03 — six times better than the industry rate of 0.5. The FY24 metrics also reflect an improvement upon KCNSC’s FY23 lost workday rate of 0.08.
Senior HS&E Manager Kevin Allgeyer attributes KCNSC’s continued success in these areas to the team’s dedication to gathering insights at all levels of the organization. Leveraging channels such as the Safety Squad, Gemba walks and tiered accountability, he said, helps create a well-rounded perspective to help resolve and prevent safety concerns.
“These achievements could not have been accomplished without the engagement of both employees and leaders in HSE&EM,” said Allgeyer of the NSC achievements. “The immediate reporting of injuries, as well as employees communicating Good Catches and near misses gives us the opportunity to proactively address issues and keep staff safe while performing the KCNSC mission.”
NIOSH and NHCA Safe-In-Sound Award
The Safe-In-Sound Award is presented annually to recognize organizations that document measurable achievements in hearing loss prevention (HLP). The award is sponsored by NIOSH and the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA) with the goal of sharing real-world HLP successes to organizations nationwide.
As an FY24 winner of the Safe-In-Sound Award, KCNSC was evaluated against key performance indicators and identified as a leader in developing and following good HLP practices. HS&E Engineer III Alyson Gray noted that multiple continuous improvement efforts contributed to the company’s success in these areas, including preliminary and continued assessments of noise exposure in the plant, employee engagement on noise-related concerns via the Good Catch system and kaizens to mitigate the risk of noise exposure.
A Culture of Proactive Safety
KCNSC’s HSE&EM organization continues to work relentlessly with the understanding that safety is a continually evolving area where no win is too small. Integrated Supply Chain Vice President Dylan Plemons thanked the HSE&EM team for its dedication and spoke to the impact its efforts have had on the KCNSC population.
“Our success in maintaining a safe workplace is a direct reflection of the teamwork and vigilance displayed by our employees,” said Plemons. “These awards are not just accolades — they represent the real impact of efforts in creating a safer workplace.”
Moibi echoed his sentiment, noting that the external recognition from the awards showcases the importance of the health and safety values at KCNSC.
“These awards serve as a reminder of the extraordinary dedication and passion KCNSC employees bring to their work every day in championing a culture of proactive safety,” said Moibi. “Each of you plays a vital role in creating a safe workplace, and I couldn’t be prouder to work alongside such a committed team.”
You can help make a difference in workplace safety and equipment reliability by identifying and addressing improvement opportunities in your work area. Employees are encouraged to conduct Gembas with peers or leadership, engage the Safety Squad, submit a Good Catch for existing issues or near misses and leverage tier meetings to help others apply lessons learned in their work areas. If you identify risks that need to be addressed, use the appropriate avenue to escalate and request HSE&EM intervention.
