Interns volunteer at Harvesters

Our interns are already hard at work in the community and inside our business. Over the course of a week, 36 of our summer interns had the opportunity to pack meals for people in
need at Harvesters in Kansas City.

KCNSC has been a longtime supporter of Harvesters and the annual outing is a favorite among our intern group.

Annika Kuhnke, Graduate Intern I, is a returning intern from University of Kansas. As a lifelong Harvesters volunteer, Annika was quick to sign up for the opportunity and appreciates the time to network with interns outside of work. This year, interns packed commodity food boxes to be sent to senior citizens facing monthly food insecurities. While the work was hard, they also had a lot of fun while doing it.

“I get to meet so many people from different departments that I otherwise would have never met if I was just limited to working within my department,” Annika said. “It’s also a lot of fun, Harvesters was playing music and a good portion of us were singing and kind of dancing as we packed the boxes.”

This year volunteering looked a little bit different due to the COVID-19 pandemic with Harvesters having to limit volunteer groups to 10 people. Despite these new restrictions, the interns were able to still make an impact in the community by packing nearly 400 boxes over the course of four volunteering sessions.
Harvesters serves 26 counties throughout northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, providing 47 million meals to people facing food insecurity annually. Our mission has a deep commitment to supporting our community here in Kansas City and spending time at Harvesters is one of the many ways we do this.
