Honeywell Supports New Mexico Discovery Festival

Year after year students throughout Albuquerque, New Mexico flock to Discovery Festival, an annual STEAM event that was created to teach students grades K-12 about science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Honeywell serves as the presenting sponsor of the event where typically there are 25-plus employees who volunteer their time to support the thousands of students in attendance.  However, like other events in 2020, Discovery Festival went virtual.

Instead of turning a one-day festival into a single virtual event, the event organizers, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico, elected to celebrate Discovery Festival throughout the month of November. For 15 days leading up to Thanksgiving, Discovery Festival programming is being made available to students through a “Virtual Exhibit Hall,” which features live and on-demand educational and interactive programming that enables participants to learn more about STEAM.

Honeywell is among the organizations virtually supporting the event by interacting with students attending the educational sessions. The week of November 9, mechanical engineers Julio Alvarado and James Nolan participated in Discovery Festival by talking to students about magnets and their many uses in science and engineering. Additionally, during the week of November 16, mechanical engineer Caysee Epaloose and electrical engineer James Nance taught students how to create a solar oven out of everyday supplies to make s’mores.

Discovery Festival continues through Tuesday, November 24. As part of each session, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico recognizes Honeywell for its continued support of Discovery Festival. For more information about Discovery Festival, visit discoveryfestnm.org.
