Topping-Off Ceremony Marks Major Progress for New KC Production Facility
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) continues to advance the Kansas City Non-Nuclear Expansion Transformation (KC NExT), a multi-phase real estate acquisition strategy to add approximately two million square feet of manufacturing and office space. This latest achievement supports President Donald Trump’s directive to reinvigorate the nuclear industrial base and modernize defense acquisitions. The President’s policies emphasize the need for swift action, resilient infrastructure, and continuous innovation to maintain America’s security and industrial strength.
On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, NNSA and its partner organizations celebrated a topping-off ceremony for Phase 2, recognizing the placement of the final structural beam at the highest point of the building. Team members signed the beam before it was hoisted into place – a tradition symbolizing pride, craftsmanship, and collaboration.
KC NExT’s multi-phase expansion will deliver modern, resilient facilities and increase production capacity – ensuring NNSA can meet mission requirements with greater urgency and reliability.
Phase 2 represents the first of the manufacturing buildings for the planned campus, which will ultimately span 245 acres. NNSA’s mission requires us to build with urgency and purpose,” said NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams. “The topping-off of Phase 2 of Kansas City’s expansion reflects our commitment to delivering modern, resilient infrastructure to support our deterrence mission and expand critical production capabilities.”
KC NExT’s pace demonstrates NNSA’s dedication to challenging the status quo to deliver modern infrastructure quickly and efficiently, without compromising quality or mission needs. The topping-off of Phase 2 reflects months of accelerated planning, coordination, execution, and partnership with the KC NExT developer, Promontory 150 LLC – ensuring that increased capacity comes online as rapidly as possible.
Construction of the Phase 2 manufacturing facility began in late 2025, and the completion of the structural frame is a major step toward delivering flexible, advanced production space designed to support expanding manufacturing requirements. Once construction is completed in fall 2027, the building will transfer to NNSA ownership and outfitting will begin to enable increased capacity for high‑precision, non‑nuclear component production directly supporting national defense strategies.
Launched in 2024, each phase of KC NExT becomes operational immediately upon completion – even as construction advances on the next. This cadence keeps urgent progress at the forefront while ensuring production remains continuous and resilient. NNSA celebrated the transfer of Phase 1 earlier this year which included a 700-person office building.
KCNSC continues to play a vital role in the Nuclear Security Enterprise, producing over 80 percent of the non-nuclear components that support the U.S. nuclear deterrent. The advancements in Phase 2 represent another major step toward meeting production demands with urgency and strengthening the nation’s deterrence posture for decades to come. The KC NExT project is a foundational investment in the future of the Nuclear Security Enterprise and our broader national security.
