New model for mentoring small business suppliers

Every day the Kansas City National Security Campus relies on a network of trusted suppliers essential to meeting our national security mission. Our Small Business Program is dedicated to providing contracting opportunities for small and disadvantaged businesses. In fact, they've more than doubled purchases from Small Businesses in the last 2 years. In 2016, Honeywell awarded more than $215 million (54.45% of spend) to 1,023 small businesses, including businesses owned by minorities, women, veterans and service-disabled veterans as part of their management of the KCNSC for the U.S. Department of Energy.

As part of an effort to help develop suppliers, Honeywell hosted a Small Business Supplier Symposium on June 28. Sixty-eight current small business suppliers from all over the United States came to the KCNSC for a day of networking, workshops and small business awards. Fourteen workshops were facilitated by Honeywell and community subject matter experts with topics that included Cyber Security, Marketing Strategy, Strategic Planning, Entrepreneurship, Supplier Expectations, Organizational Effectiveness, and Free Small Business Resources.

Congratulations to the following suppliers who received 2017 Outstanding Small Business Supplier Awards:

  • Arundel Machine Tool
  • BC Office Solutions
  • Precision Ferrites & Ceramics
  • Printed Circuits LLC
  • Taylor Scientific
  • Technical Assurance
  • TEVET LLC

Karen Wrigley, Honeywell Small Business Program Manager in Kansas City explained the goal for the event. "For decades Honeywell has been mentoring suppliers one at a time through the DOE's Mentor Protégé program and our own supplier development initiatives," she said. "Our goal for the Small Business Symposium was to coach and develop 60+ suppliers on topics pertinent to their business success at one location in one day."
