Making Things Better: Laura Hartwig Promoted to Honeywell Fellow
The Kansas City National Security Campus’ Laura Hartwig, licensed Professional Engineer (PE), and certified Project Management Professional (PMP), was promoted to Honeywell International’s Fellow. She is one of four other Honeywell FM&T employees and the first woman to achieve this prestigious designation at the KCNSC. Honeywell FM&T is the managing and operating contractor for the US Department of Energy’s KCNSC.
“I am glad that my promotion provides some representation for females in the Fellow rank; as well as inspiration for other women to pursue technical career paths. I’m also a bit different from the other Fellows in that my career includes time in management positions and my arena of expertise is product realization and systems engineering,” Laura said.
Capturing the attention of an organization like Honeywell is no small task. The work we do at the KCNSC to support the safety and security of our nation is unique compared to many of the company’s business units.
To become a Honeywell Fellow, an employee must be an expert and leader in a technical area of high importance to Honeywell. Fellows must provide technical leadership for major growth programs, act as subject-matter experts in a key technology field, participate in developing technology-related business strategy and serve as a primary technical resource for business leaders.
With more than 25 years of experience in engineering, 20 of those with the KCNSC, Laura fulfills each of those requirements and then some.
In her most recent role, Laura served as Principal Engineer at the KCNSC where she led New Product Introduction sub-teams and internal Production-Ready Engineering Processes teams, coordinated multiple process improvement teams to improve the execution of technical processes in weapon product realization and communicated Production Ready processes and principles with our federal customer and other Nuclear Security Enterprise sites. She also worked as a key author within the Federally-led team writing the new Nuclear Security Enterprise Product Realization Process requirements document.
Laura was awarded the Honeywell FM&T’s Knuth Award for Continuous Improvement in 2015 and the Honeywell Aerospace Award for IPG achievements in 2008. She also received a letter of commendation from a former National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Assistant Deputy Administrator in 2010, and a letter of commendation from Joseph Oder, Director of NNSA Nuclear Weapons Stockpile Division in 2009.
She serves as elder at Lakewood Community Church and participates in advocacy efforts for people with disabilities. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a master’s in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. She is Six Sigma Black Belt certified, a licensed Professional Engineer, and holds Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. She mentors multiple Honeywell employees.
“I’m very passionate about our mission and our people, and it’s been my privilege to work on efforts intended to make things better,” she said. “I’m proud that I’ve gotten to work on improvement efforts with great people.”
