KC NExT Construction Begins to Take Shape

National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) leaders and industry partners gathered on August 7 to celebrate the beginning of the Kansas City Non-Nuclear Expansion Transformation (KC NExT) project, a new chapter for the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC).

Earlier this spring NNSA entered into an agreement with Promontory 150 LLC to purchase land and develop “build-to-suit” facilities immediately East of the KCNSC Botts Road location. Construction is under way at the new expanded campus which will add approximately 2 million sq. ft. of manufacturing and office space needed to fulfill the nuclear weapon modernization efforts in the coming years.

“KC NExT is a great example of NNSA’s ability to innovate, collaborate, and deliver,” said Jill Hruby, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security of the U.S. Department of Energy and Administrator of the NNSA. “We are committed to delivering and maintaining a safe and credible nuclear deterrent for our nation– and the Kansas City expansion is integral to our success.”

KCNSC has a history of continually adapting to meet the needs of America’s nuclear security mission. This agility and willingness to embrace change are critical parts to its 75-year legacy in the Nuclear Security Enterprise. Every day, more than 7,000 employees come to work to develop advanced solutions for complex national security issues, from prototype simulations to production to quality testing.

“The KC NExT expansion adds much needed capacity and strengthens NNSA’s long-term national security mission,” said Jeff Shoulta, Manager, NNSA Kansas City Field Office. “KC NExT will provide state-of-the-art manufacturing and office space to give our talented employees the tools they need to continue the mission well into the future.”

The developer-led construction of Phase 1 of KC NExT's multi-phased approach is scheduled to be completed in mid-2026. The first occupants are expected to start moving in after federal acceptance and outfitting activities conclude in late 2026. It is envisioned a new Phase will be started every year for at least the next decade.
