Blue Valley North High School (KS) and Pleasant Ridge Middle School (KS) win the Regional Science Bowl
On March 6-7 the 37th Annual Kansas and Missouri Regional Tournament – sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), managed by Honeywell FM&T – was held at Metropolitan Community College’s Longview Campus in Lee’s Summit. Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, Kansas, won the high school regional. Pleasant Ridge Middle School in Overland Park won the Kansas middle school regional.
Both teams will compete against other regional winners at the DOE National Science Bowl from April 30–May 4 in Washington, D.C.
The National Science Bowl® is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams face off in a fast-paced Q&A format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy and math.
DOE created the National Science Bowl® in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. This year, eight high school teams and five middle school teams participated in the Kansas and Missouri Regional Tournament, and approximately 325,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® throughout its 31-year history.
KCNSC has sponsored the Kansas and Missouri Regional Science Bowl Tournament for nearly four decades as part of its ongoing efforts to get students excited about science, technology, engineering and math, and to inspire them to pursue careers in these fields. With STEM jobs growing three times faster than other sectors, KCNSC is working to boost the region’s talent pipeline.
“Seeing students engage in this competition brings me so much joy. They are passionate, intelligent and ready to tackle the challenges of the future and inspire the next breakthroughs in STEM,” said Amanda Hill, Senior Community Relations Specialist at KCNSC.
